The International Law Commission was established by the General Assembly, in 1947, to undertake the mandate of the Assembly, under article 13 (1) (a) of the Charter of the United Nations to "initiate studies and make recommendations for the purpose of ... encouraging the progressive development of international law and its codification".

In accordance with resolution 78/108 of 7 December 2023, the International Law Commission was scheduled to hold its seventy-fifth session at the United Nations Office in Geneva (UNOG) from 15 April to 31 May and from 1 July to 2 August 2024 (12 weeks). However, in light of the ongoing financial crisis, the session will now be held from 29 April to 31 May and from 1 July to 2 August 2024 (10 weeks), in conference room XXI.

17 July 2024 The President of the International Court of Justice, H.E. Judge Nawaf Salam, addressed the Commission. An exchange of views followed.

10 July 2024 The Special Rapporteur, Mr. Mathias Forteau, introduced his first report on the topic (A/CN.4/772). The Commission began its consideration of the Special Rapporteur’s first report.

Immunity of State officials

9 July 2024 The Special Rapporteur summed up the debate on his first report on the topic (A/CN.4/775).  The Commission decided to refer draft articles 1 to 6 to the Drafting Committee.

Filling of casual vacancy

8 July 2024 A casual vacancy on the ILC has arisen following the resignation of Mr. Huikang Huang.

Visit of the USG for Legal Affairs and United Nations Legal Counsel

2 July 2024 The USG for Legal Affairs and UN Legal Counsel, Mr. Miguel de Serpa Soares, made a statement informing the Commission of the activities of the Office of Legal Affairs and recent developments of international law in the context of the UN. An exchange of views followed.

1 July 2024 The Special Rapporteur, Mr. Claudio Grossman, introduced his first report on the topic (A/CN.4/775).

Piracy and armed robbery at sea

1 July 2024 The Chair of the Drafting Committee presented the interim oral report of the Drafting Committee on the topic (A/CN.4/L.1000). The Commission took note of the interim oral report.

Subsidiary means

1 July 2024 The Chair of the Drafting Committee presented the report of the Drafting Committee on the topic (A/CN.4/L.999). The Commission considered the report and adopted the titles and texts of the draft conclusions 6 to 8.

26 June 2024 First report on immunity of State officials from foreign criminal jurisdiction, by Claudio Grossman Guiloff, Special Rapporteur has been issued (A/CN.4/775).
