The world of Suits is officially getting larger.
NBC has given a series order to Suits: LA, a spinoff of/companion show to the former USA Network series-turned-streaming juggernaut. The network has also picked up Grosse Pointe Garden Society, a murder mystery from the team behind Good Girls.
NBC hasn’t scheduled either show yet, but it’s conceivable they could be ready for the second half of the 2024-25 season. Crime drama The Hunting Party is currently the only midseason scripted series on tap for the network.
Like its predecessor, Suits: LA comes from creator Aaron Korsh. After Suits became a massive streaming hit last year, Korsh and Universal Studio Group’s UCP, which produced the original series, began developing a second show set in the same world — though not featuring any characters (at least at the outset) from the New York-set Suits. NBC ordered a pilot for the show in February,...

Are Jeopardy!‘s rulings on pronunciation becoming too inconsistent? That’s what some viewers think after last Thursday’s (July 18) episode when a contestant was ruled incorrect for a slight mispronunciation of the word “wagyu.” The contestant in question was Meredith Miller, a labor economist from Arlington, Virginia, who was attempting to answer a clue under the “Some Hats, Some Cattle” category for $1,600. The clue read, “The name of this cattle breed prized for its marbled beef literally means ‘Japanese Cow.'” Miller buzzed in and answered, “What is Way-gu?” Host Ken Jennings took a brief pause before responding, “Mmm, no.” After Miller’s fellow contestants didn’t buzz in, Jennings revealed the correct answer. “So close, Meredith,” he said. “You didn’t have a ‘Y.’ Wagyu.” This ruling dropped Miller into third place with $400, and she ultimately finished the episode in last place. “The pronunciation of Wagyu was close call – maybe too close?...

President Joe Biden‘s decision to withdraw from the 2024 presidential campaign on Sunday (July 21) left Fox News scrambling for talking points, especially after Biden endorsed Vice President Kamala Harris as the new Democrat nominee. According to The Huffington Post, long-time Fox News anchor Sean Hannity called for Biden to resign immediately, declaring “democracy is dead in the Democratic Party” and “If he had any decency at all he would leave the White House this week and never come back.” However, when it came to thoughts on Harris, Hannity appeared to struggle to argue why she’d make a bad president, resorting to poking fun at her laugh and railing against her call to ban plastic straws. Hannity: She wants to ban plastic straws. I love my plastic straws. I hate paper straws. pic.twitter.com/B2InDSIFTz — Acyn (@Acyn) July 22, 2024 Hannity: Here’s just one reason voters seem to detest...

Wayne Brady is used to making people smile and always being “on” as an entertainer. However, behind those pearly whites, the Let’s Make A Deal host has been through mental health struggles and his fair share of life changes. Last year, he came out as pansexual. The actor, comedian, host, and singer wants to let people in beyond what they see on stage. This Hollywood multihyphenate will do that like never before with Wayne Brady: The Family Remix. For the new reality show, cameras followed him and the rest of his squad. This included his ex-wife and business partner Mandie Taketa, as well as their 21-year-old Maile. She looks to make her own mark in the industry. Also in the mix is Jason Fordham, Mandie’s life partner since 2009. He handles the family’s cinematography and post-production. Mandie and Jason have a toddler son, Sundance-Isamu. Together they prove a family...

After President Joe Biden bowed out of the 2024 presidential race on Sunday (July 21) and endorsed Vice President Kamala Harris as the new nominee, social media users pointed out how The Simpsons once again made a prescient prediction. Now that Harris has a chance to become President, The Simpsons fans pointed out the similarities between the current VP and Lisa Simpson from the Season 11 episode “Bart to the Future,” which aired on March 19, 2000. In that episode, Bart is given a glimpse of three decades in the future, where Lisa is elected president and is seen wearing a purple pantsuit and pearl necklace. Fans, including actress Real Housewives of Atlanta alum Claudia Jordan, took to social media on Sunday to point out how Harris wore a similar purple ensemble and pearl necklace at Biden’s inauguration held on January 20, 2021. “Not for nothing but the Simpsons already predicted this….” Jordan wrote on X...

In a new episode of “Morning Joe” on Monday, host Joe Scarborough shared his thoughts on Joe Biden officially dropping out of the presidential race, saying that he thinks Donald Trump and Republicans are now “freaking out.”
“I’ve heard from inside the Trump campaign for some time right now that the one thing Donald Trump feared was not having Joe Biden to run against,” Scarborough said. “If you talk about boxing, he was used to going against Biden, right? So, what have they done? They’ve switched it up — it’s going to be a southpaw now.”

Apparently based on real-world events in which a Japanese school was sued by a pupil after it banned romantic liaisons between students, “Chastity High” is poised to be Netflix’s first young adult series from Japan.
The series, which premiers on Aug. 29, takes a glimpse into a world where a prestigious high school bans dating between students and chaos follows. Some students rebel against the school rules, while others expose one another.
Produced by Robot Communications, the series follows two students, portrayed by Mikami Ai and Miyase Ryubi.

Under the proposed split, Canal+ would list on the London Stock Exchange, reflecting its international reach. The pay-tv group, which may pursue a secondary listing in Johannesburg pending its MultiChoice tender offer, would remain a French tax resident.

“House of the Dragon” is on week three of Daemon’s (Matt Smith) Harrenhal staycation, and I feel like I, the viewer, am starting to hallucinate as well.
Certainly that was the predominant feeling at the end of Season 3, Episode 6, written by Eileen Shim and directed by Andrij Parekh — but we’ll get there.
All is not well in King’s Landing, where Prince Regent Aemond (Ewan Mitchell) reigns in lieu of his mother or brother. As predicted, the King’s brother is a known tyrant, intent on demonstrating his strength and his house’s during any length of rule. Admittedly Aemond has success and skill in battle, but diplomacy isn’t his forte, and the more his council pushes for it, the more he eschews political civility. He finally makes the one decision that none of them will disagree with — the council is, as you say, sexist — and dismisses Alicent to exercise his control.

The screenwriter behind “A Few Good Men” and “The American President,” as well as the creator of the much-lauded TV series “The West Wing,” Aaron Sorkin, despite having no experience in government or politics, has always claimed a sharp understanding of the behind-the-scenes machinations that keep the world spinning. In his most recent display of this keen awareness, Sorkin published an op-ed in The New York Times this morning, prior to President Biden announcing his withdrawal from the presidential race and endorsement of Vice President Kamala Harris, in which he told Democrats to nominate Republican Mitt Romney at their convention next month.
In the piece, Sorkin reflects on a season 3 plot of “The West Wing” in which fictional President Bartlet (Martin Sheen) decides to run for re-election despite recently announcing withholding his multiple sclerosis diagnosis from the electorate. Bartlet managed to prove his worthiness despite the illness and goes on to win a second term,...

A decade or so ago, the hottest trend in television was imagining what it might look like if politics became unfathomably chaotic. From the murderous hijinks surrounding the Fitzgerald Grant administration on “Scandal” to the skullduggery that allowed Frank Underwood to climb the federal government like a ladder on “House of Cards” to the whipsawing reversals of fortune that befell Selina Meyer on “Veep,” TV was the staging-ground for a feverish national imagination. Writers dreamed of a world that looked different from our own, in which the competent and technocratic Obama administration found itself, after the first midterms, grinding through gridlock.

Aaron Sorkin no longer believes the Democratic Party should select Republican Senator Mitt Romney as its candidate in the 2024 presidential race.
Earlier on Sunday, an op-ed by Sorkin was published in the New York Times, in which the “West Wing” creator suggested that the Democratic Party should select a Republican candidate to defeat former President Donald Trump this November.
“At their convention next month, the Democrats should nominate Mitt Romney,” Sorkin wrote.
However, after President Joe Biden announced hours later that he was dropping out of the race, Sorkin retracted his sentiment — or his “pitch to the writers’ room,” as...

Many of them knew it was coming, but not exactly when.
The nation’s big TV-news outlets appear to have been caught flat-footed by President Joe Biden’s Sunday announcement that he would end his 2024 campaign for the White House, with many top anchors not visible on screen in the minutes after the president dropped his bombshell.
Broadcast networks fielded faces that were not as familiar. CBS News broke into programming at 2:02 p.m. with coverage lead by Kristine Johnson, an anchor at Wcbs, the company’s New York station, suggesting Norah O’Donnell, Margaret Brennan or Major Garrett were...

Former President Donald Trump reacted to Joe Biden’s decision to drop out of the 2024 presidential race on Sunday, following Biden’s inability to recover from a series of missteps and a poor debate performance on June 27 and a loud vocal call from politicians and even celebrities such as George Clooney.
“Crooked Joe Biden was not fit to run for President, and is certainly not fit to serve – And never was! He only attained the position of President by lies, Fake News, and not leaving his Basement,” Trump wrote on Truth Social. “All those around him, including his Doctor and the Media,...

After weeks of mounting pressure from fellow Democrats and media pundits, President Joe Biden has decided to bow out of the 2024 presidential race against Republican candidate Donald Trump. He is endorsing Vice President Kamala Harris as the new nominee. Biden, who was elected to office in 2020, resisted calls for him to step down for weeks but finally relented after the caliber of party officials seeking his withdrawal reached the tippy top, claiming he had the best chance to win. Biden announced his decision to bow out of the race in a statement shared to X (formerly known as Twitter) on Sunday, July 21, noting that he plans to address the nation in further detail later this week. “It has been the greatest honor of my life to serve as your President,” he said. “And while it has been my intention to seek reelection, I believe it is in the best interest...

What’s funnier than 24? Twenty-five (years of SpongeBob Squarepants)! The Nickelodeon series about the energetic fry cook under the sea premiered in 1999 and quickly became an icon of animation. In the video above, stars Tom Kenny (SpongeBob Squarepants) and Bill Fagerbakke (Patrick Star) talk about the animated favorite’s legacy. Both stars are touched by the “longevity” of the show, and how diverse the fanbase is. Says Kenny, “The legacy of of SpongeBob is just hopefully the impact that it had on people that watched it at a formative stage of their lives…are now watching it with their kids and maybe even watch it with their parents or grandparents.” Kenny says that it’s “gratifying” to have people cite SpongeBob as a source for their senses of humor. Fagerbakke noted they’re in a great club, saying, “…for me, it was Looney Tunes and Merrie Melodies and Bugs Bunny...

Don’t expect more Samantha Jones call-ins when And Just Like That… returns for its third season. On Saturday, July 20, an X user and fan of the Sex and the City spinoff shared an article speculating that Kim Cattrall would return as Samantha in Season 3. “Aw, that’s so kind, but I’m not,” Cattrall responded on Sunday. Aw that’s so kind but I’m not — Kim Cattrall (@KimCattrall) July 21, 2024 Earlier this month, Life & Style reported that Cattrall is “widely believed to be a big part” of Ajlt Season 3. “Since they’ve paved the way for Samantha to come back, it’s assumed that they’ve done a deal with Kim, and they’re just waiting for the right time to announce it,” a source told the tabloid. “The word is that she’ll get to do all her scenes in London. Watch out, Bridgerton! My Lady Jane is coming for your romance crown! The Prime Video romance series puts a thrilling and feminist twist on the ill-fated Lady Jane Grey (Emily Bader). Instead of being a basic period drama that ends with Jane Grey’s death, My Lady Jane rewrites Jane’s story and gives her a new ending. Over the course of the eight-episode series, Jane survives death (more than once), becomes queen, and marries the love of her life, Lord Guildford Dudley (Edward Bluemel), an “Ethian” who happens to transform into a horse during the day. My Lady Jane has everything you want in a show—it’s sexy, fun, and full of adventure and fantasy. The ending of Season 1 leaves the door wide open for more of Jane’s story. So, will there be a Season 2 of My Lady Jane? TV Insider is breaking down the latest updates.

Disney’s “The Acolyte” has just finished up its season, with Season 5 of “Star Trek: Discovery” not that far behind it, and there’s more “Strange New Worlds,” “Starfleet Academy,” “Andor,” and “Ahsoka” on the horizon. What a time to be a sci-fi nerd. But it’s an even better time, maybe, to be Hanelle Culpepper, the director who holds the distinction of being the only filmmaker (yet) to have worked across both the “Star Wars” and “Star Trek” TV franchises.
Culpepper has helmed three episodes “Star Trek: Discovery” and the very first three episodes of “Picard,” as well as Episode 6 and Episode 8 of “The Acolyte.” Going into the Disney+ series, she already had honed a lot of sci-fi muscles, as well as the skill of shooting double coverage to create twins out of one actor (Amandla Stenberg plays both fated force sisters Osha and Mae). Esta TerBlanche, who played Gillian Andrassy on All My Children, has died at age 51. Barbie Ashley, TerBlanche’s goddaughter, told TMZ that the soap star died unexpectedly on Thursday, July 18, at home in North Hollywood. TerBlanche’s cause of death is under investigation, as the actor’s representative said to the site. Medical personnel believe TerBlanche had been dead for around one day before she was found, according to TMZ. After winning Miss Teen South Africa in 1991, TerBlanche kicked off an acting career that included her gig as Gillian, a troublesome Hungarian princess, on All My Children. TerBlanche first appeared on the ABC daytime drama in 1997 and stayed until 2001, when she left the cast to return to South Africa, according to Soaps in Depth. All My Children ultimately killed off Gillian, with an assassin shooting the princess in a case of mistaken identity. Ryan Lavery (Cameron Mathison), Gillian’s husband,...

Things couldn’t be much worse for the prison’s warden, Michael Beach‘s Kareem Moore. On top of that, his home life is falling apart — now his daughter needs expensive therapy sessions for her trauma that stems from his still-wide-open mental wounds from the prison riot. Halfway through “House of the Dragon” Season 2, we need to assess our surroundings. There have already been multiple major character deaths, an airborne dragon battle, attempted fratricide, twin-on-twin violence, and a character known only as “Cheese” kicked a dog.
At the midseason mark, two of IndieWire’s TV critics weigh in: Is the season worth the C+ bestowed upon it by Ben Travers? Will it live up to Proma Khosla’s dreams of “Fire & Blood?” With Ryan Condal now operating as sole showrunner, the series has a de facto creative leader at the helm, one whose commitment to the source material has his cast in awe.
There are still canon departures and literal flights of fancy (thanks to Matt Smith’s Daemon), as well as moments that harken back to “Game of Thrones” in its heyday.

When Jeopardy! writers and judges get it wrong, or when they don’t give contestants a fair shot, you can be sure they’ll hear about it on social media. On social media, viewers live-tweet and dissect each episode of the beloved trivia game show. And clues that are inaccurate, confusingly worded, or downright misleading get armchair players up in arms. Here are nine such clues, from one that got into the “Psyche” of fans to another that had bumps in the “Highway.” “Um, what just happened?” “This god of love hid Psyche & visited in secret until she found out who he was,” read the $400 “Mythology” clue on May 2, 2023. Contestant Paul Guelpa responded with Eros, but competitor Amanda Hendrickson got the $400 after responding with Cupid. And it wasn’t until later in the game that Paul got $800 added to his score retroactively, since Eros is the Greek mythological counterpart of the Roman god Cupid.

The lineup of contenders runs the gamut from the spectacle of “Shōgun” to the slow burn of “Slow Horses” to the out-of-nowhere sleeper stalker story of the year, “Baby Reindeer.”
By any definition, nominations for the 76th annual Emmy Awards, unveiled July 17, were well outside the box.
And while 2024 marks the first time in the history of the Emmys that two ceremonies have been...

There’s been a lot of media commentary recently about an independent film called “The Long Game” that unseated “Beverly Hills Cop: Axel F” from its No. 1 slot on Netflix in the U.S. “The Long Game,” a period feel-good drama starring Jay Hernandez, Cheech Marin and Dennis Quaid, has also grabbed attention by ranking as Nextflix’s sixth most popular film on a global basis.
In my view, none of the various headlines spurred by “The Long Game” really understood the data aspect that drove what happened with the movie. They didn’t give credit where credit is properly due.

For Fiona Harvey, the woman who claims to be the inspiration for Baby Reindeer’s stalker character, the Netflix series’ impressive Emmy recognition is a “slap in the face.” Baby Reindeer earned 11 nominations for the 2024 Emmy Awards — including an Outstanding Limited or Anthology Series nomination and nods for creator-star Richard Gadd and costars Jessica Gunning, Nava Mau, and Tom Goodman-Hill. But Richard Roth, Harvey’s lawyer, told the Daily Mail that the nominations were the latest “slap in the face” for Harvey — who “suffered a life-changing tragedy” due to Baby Reindeer’s “brutal lies,” he added. “There was some suggestion that the series shouldn’t have been nominated for Emmys because of this ongoing issue,” Roth said. “The Netflix claim that Baby Reindeer is a true story is clearly false.” Now Harvey is living in fear, Roth said. “She’s afraid to go out in case people shout at her in the street,...

Everyone sort of knows what “Star Wars” looks like: glowing lightsabers, speeding spaceships, adorable goofball droids, a sunset filled with promise. But setting a story over a hundred years before the Prequel films, as Disney+ does with “The Acolyte,” provides an interesting case study for what filmmaking tools are strongest in The Force.
Creator and director of the first two episodes of “The Acolyte,” Leslye Headland had no stormtroopers, no rebellion, no political conflict of any kind to play with in the High Republic era. But even so, she and her creative team deliberately set up a visual style that would, as history does, not necessarily repeat but rhyme with how George Lucas approached shooting the original trilogy.
Headland looked to Lucas for the playful camera wipes running throughout “The Acolyte” — “I thought somebody was gonna stop us from doing that. But nobody did,” Headland told IndieWire on an episode of the Filmmaker Toolkit podcast.

After Paramount+ canceled Halo after two seasons, producers are trying to get a third season off the ground somewhere else — and viewers are reflecting on the video game adaptation’s demise. Halo’s cancellation made headlines on Thursday, July 18. “We are extremely proud of this ambitious series and would like to thank our partners at Xbox, 343 Industries, and Amblin Television, along with showrunner and executive producer David Wiener, his fellow executive producers, the entire cast led by Pablo Schreiber as Master Chief, and the amazing crew for all their outstanding work,” Paramount+ said in a statement, per TVLine. “We wish everyone the best going forward.” In its statement, 343 Industries said: “We deeply appreciate the millions of fans who propelled the Halo series to be a global success, and we remain committed to broadening the Halo universe in different ways in the future. We are grateful to Amblin and Paramount...
