“Twisters” is taking the box office by storm, though it’s not resonating quite as strongly with international audiences.
The film, a standalone sequel to the 1996 disaster epic “Twister,” has whipped up $27.1 million from 76 foreign territories over the weekend and $42 million overseas in total. “Twisters” has been far more powerful at the domestic box office, though, where ticket sales ignited to $80.5 million. Globally, the movie has grossed $123.2 million to date.
Outside of the U.S. and Canada, this weekend’s biggest markets were the United Kingdom ($5.5 million), Mexico ($2.5 million), Australia ($2 million) and France ($1.9 million). “Twisters” misfired in China, earning a paltry $1.5 million in its debut. Imax screens contributed $2.2 million internationally and $11.2 million globally for the weekend.
“Twisters” cost $155 million to produce, not including the many millions in global marketing efforts. Universal Pictures backed the movie and released it domestically while Warner Bros. has international rights. The film has yet to open in Japan or Korea.

As a new Blade film continues its long gestation process, Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige is offering a bit of insight into the company’s approach for the reboot.
Feige sat down with BlackTree TV to promote the July 26 release of Disney’s Deadpool & Wolverine. During the interview released Saturday, the film producer was asked about the ongoing development of a new Blade, which was first announced at San Diego Comic-Con in 2019 with Mahershala Ali attached to star as the title half-vampire character.
The Marvel honcho was asked if Disney releasing Deadpool & Wolverine with an R-rating changes how the team can approach Blade, given that the previous movies — which starred Wesley Snipes and began with the original 1998 Blade — were all rated R. The new Deadpool film marks the first R-rated title from Marvel Studios.

Lee Isaac Chung’s Twisters is whipping up huge winds at the box office, with forecasters predicting a far better than expected domestic opening of $80.5 million in North America. That’s even up from Saturday’s already massive estimate of $74.6 million.
The record-breaking movie, playing in 4,151 theaters, easily boasts the top domestic opening ever for a natural disaster film, not adjusted for inflation. (The current crown holder is Roland Emmerich’s The Day After Tomorrow, which bowed to $68.44 million in 2004.) It’s also the third biggest start of the year to date behind Inside Out 2 ($154.2 million) and Dune: Part Two ($82.5 million) after edging out Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire ($80 million).
The turnout for Twisters cements the rising star status of Hollywood’s man-of-the-moment Glen Powell, along with Daisy Edgar-Jones and Anthony Ramos (the trio lead the ensemble cast). It’s also a notable win for Chung, the acclaimed filmmaker of indie hit Minari.

There’s been a lot of media commentary recently about an independent film called “The Long Game” that unseated “Beverly Hills Cop: Axel F” from its No. 1 slot on Netflix in the U.S. “The Long Game,” a period feel-good drama starring Jay Hernandez, Cheech Marin and Dennis Quaid, has also grabbed attention by ranking as Nextflix’s sixth most popular film on a global basis.
In my view, none of the various headlines spurred by “The Long Game” really understood the data aspect that drove what happened with the movie. They didn’t give credit where credit is properly due.

While Hollywood spent the first half of the summer fretting over its soft box office, the Tollywood-made blockbuster Kalki 2898 AD quietly entered the fray, earning a surprisingly healthy $5.4 million in its late June debut in North American. While in the grand scheme of things that’s a modest number compared to Hollywood blockbusters, it was a win for Indian cinema, and signals that the Bollywood of India’s South is expanding on the potential reach for the country’s cinema.

If one were to make a Mount Rushmore of classic horror films, there's a more than decent chance that 1980s' "Friday the 13th" would make the cut. Directed by Sean S. Cunningham and written by Victor Miller, the legendary slasher spawned a franchise that is still popular to this day. We haven't had a movie in the series since 2009's "Friday the 13th" remake, but that's another story entirely. But while as important as the movie may be, it turns out that many of the now-legendary kills were done in very low-tech ways. Case in point, the axe to the face that led to the demise of Marcie Stanler was accomplished with a gag item that could be purchased at a magic shop.
In a 2015 oral history on the film published by Uproxx, the filmmakers were discussing the scene in which Jeannine Taylor's Marcie meets her demise when Pamela Voorhees...

Love triangle caper about a woman who bears twins by two different fathers gives disappointingly more life to its competing men
This slightly racy Hindi-language romcom is mapped across a love triangle between two men and a woman, but its geometry is all out of whack. Thanks to a combination of raw star power and the way the script (credited to Tarun Dudeja and Ishita Moitra) is crafted, rising star Vicky Kaushal gets the most acute angle as a swaggering Punjabi mamma’s boy Akhil Chadha, who self-describes as a Goat. His fancy footwork in the opening song-and-dance sequence is impressive if not entirely supportive of his outrageous greatest-of-all-time claim, but at least you can see why aspiring chef Saloni (Triptii Dimri) might take a shine to him.
Before long, the two have married, honeymooned in Croatia where they break beds regularly with their lovemaking (there’s kissing but nothing...

This post contains spoilers for "Barbarian."
Zach Cregger's "Barbarian" kicks off with a two-character scene that crackles with the tension of a finely crafted one-act play. It's probably impossible to walk into "Barbarian" without knowing you're watching a horror flick, but if you've no idea where the film is headed (beyond knowing Justin Long is going to show up at some point), you're able to sink into the alternately flirty and unnerving interaction between Georgina Campbell and Bill Skarsgård as a couple of strangers who've been flung together in a double-booked Airbnb. And the longer the scene plays, the more on edge you get. Something's got to go south here, but neither of these characters have betrayed anything close to a sinister intent.
The whole situation is doubly fraught because we have no read on Cregger as a horror filmmaker. Prior to making "Barbarian," he was best known as...

The ‘90s are back – also in Naima Mohamud’s upcoming “Halima,” produced by Finland’s It’s Alive Films, behind Oscar entry “Euthanizer,” and No-Office Films.
“It was a wild time. The hair! The clothes! I really wanted to go back to when boybands, Tamagotchis and popper pants were all the rage. And Aqua, the greatest ‘90s pop band in the world, [behind] ‘Barbie Girl’!” enthused the director, who used to be “obsessed” with its singer Lene Nystrøm.
“I tried cutting my own bangs and dyeing my hair with food coloring to rock her hairstyle. It didn’t work, of course, and the following months were agony. I got told off for wasting food coloring my mother needed to make Somali dessert halwa.”
In Mohamud’s partly autobiographical “down-to-earth dramedy about loneliness, childhood and conquering your fears” – currently in development and eyeing a 2025 shoot – it will be Halima’s turn to experience such “heartwarming and humorous” misadventures.

Bradley Cooper's image has changed a lot over the years. From "A Star is Born" to "Maestro," today's Cooper likes to play roles that are more complicated and introspective. But before he could go for the artsy roles that showed off his range, he first had to make a name for himself as the confident jerk. He played an over-the-top dirtbag boyfriend in 2005's "Wedding Crashers," and an irredeemable cheating husband in 2009's "He's Just Not That Into You." If you wanted to cast a mean dude for the audience to hate, mid-2000s Cooper was your guy.
That's why "The Hangover" in 2009 was such a good transitional role for him: he was still playing a selfish, opportunistic person, but his character Phil had a heart of gold underneath that rough exterior. Any Trekkie will be able to tell you that "Star Trek" wasn't a big hit in its initial run in 1966. Indeed, the show was all set to be canceled after its second season, and only a well-organized letter-writing campaign rescued "Star Trek" for a third year. Thanks to the gods of syndication, however, "Star Trek" continued to air in reruns for years, and it wasn't until the early 1970s that the series really started to accrue a massive audience. Prior to 1972, "Star Trek" was more or less a scrap of cult television, deeply beloved only by a small (but passionate) audience of science nerds and free-love enthusiasts.
The first large-scale "Star Trek" convention was held in New York at the end of January in 1972, and by then, it was clear that the series had become a phenomenon. Fans gathered to meet actors, discuss technology, and swap merch. "Star Trek" creator Gene Roddenberry frequented large-scale conventions,...

Welsh-Jewish film-maker Mike Joseph records his dialogue with a Palestinian journalist that reaches across an agonising divide
Made on an infinitesimal budget but with compassion, empathy and consideration, this documentary is the product of an encounter between two journalists. Mike Joseph is a Welsh Jew whose mother just barely escaped the Holocaust (the rest of her immediate family weren’t so lucky); Sami Abu Salem is Palestinian reporter living in Gaza, who has lost members of his family and close friends in the violence inflicted on Palestinians since the founding of Israel. His mother remembers the slaughter that killed dozens of people in her village, Bureir or Burayr, in 1948, a decimation wrought as Israelis established the kibbutz Bror Hayil nearby.
Years later on that kibbutz’s farms, Abu Salem worked as a young man, excited to be visiting the location of his family’s home town, even if it had all been wiped out.

Rising Indian actor Triptii Dimri is expanding her repertoire with a slate of diverse projects, including her first major comedic role and one of Bollywood’s biggest franchises.
Dimri discussed her transition to comedy in the newly released film “Bad Newz,” which is on its way to becoming a major hit, after earlier establishing herself in dramatic roles. “I personally gravitate towards drama a lot, because it’s my favorite genre. After years of project markets and multiple rounds of Asian grant funding applications, Vietnamese horror-comedy “Don’t Cry Butterfly,” is confirmed to have its world premiere in competition at the Venice Critics Week. Its backers have unveiled a first poster image.
Written and directed by Duong Dieu Linh, the Hanoi-set film follows a housewife who uses voodoo to try and get her cheating husband fall back into love with her, but instead invites a mysterious presence into the house.
The film marks the feature film directorial debut of Duong Dieu Linh, and is also a companion piece to her award-winning short film series about middle-aged women. These include “A Trip to Heaven,” “Sweet, Salty” and “Mother, Daughter, Dreams.” As with the shorts, “Butterfly” explores recurring themes of womanhood, family relations and cultural traditions, and is told through a quirky sense of humor and use of magical realism.

U.S. journalist and filmmaker Michael Premo’s doc “Homegrown,” which follows a group of supremacist Donald Trump supporters from the 2020 campaign trail all the way to the attack on the U.S. Capitol, is among titles set to world premiere at the Venice Film Festival’s Critics’ Week.
Brooklyn-born Premo played a significant role in Occupy Wall Street and Occupy Sandy’s hurricane response effort.
The out-of-competition opener of the section dedicated to first works is French director Aude Léa Rapin’s “Planet B,” a cyberpunk sci-fi film starring Adèle Exarchopoulos (“Blue Is the Warmest Color”) about a group of political activists in 2039 France who, pursued by the state, vanish without a trace only to reawaken “trapped in an entirely unfamiliar world,” according to the provided synopsis.
Besides “Homegrown,” the seven-title competition comprises Italian drama “Anywhere Anytime,” directed by Iran-born helmer Milad Tangshir. The film riffs off Vittorio De Sica’s “Bicycle Thieves,...

Rotterdam Film Festival winner Cyrielle Raingou (“Le Spectre de Boko Haram”) has secured French backing for “Pour toi je reviendrai” (I’m Coming for You), which tells the story of a single mother in northern Cameroon who joins forces with a radical group of women after being cast out of her community. Raingou is pitching the project this week at the Durban FilmMart.
The film will be produced by Raingou and Alice Abah for the director’s Cameroon-based shingle Je Capture Ma Réalité, along with French producer Jean-Marie Gigon’s SaNoSi Productions. Gigon’s credits include Gessica Généus’ Haitian drama “Freda,” which was the island nation’s submission for the 2022 Academy Awards, and Maciek Hamela’s Ukrainian war documentary “In the Rearview,” which was Oscar short-listed this year.
Pic will also be co-produced by Canal+, which has acquired the film for Africa, Haiti and French overseas departments and territories. French rights are still available.

Julia Fuhr Mann’s impressive feature eschews the usual point-counterpoint conventions that structure arguments in favour of a more artsy approach
As a summer packed with sporting competitions rolls on, this documentary about trans and intersex athletes makes a timely and thoughtful contribution to the wider conversation about sports and gender. Queer film-maker Julia Fuhr Mann’s impressive first feature eschews the usual boring point-counterpoint conventions that structure so many arguments about trans athletes. Instead, Mann opts for woozy, stylised visuals with the colour temperatures turned up to the max and a collage-like approach to editing to find a route into the subject. A gaggle of athletes of various ages, nationalities and gender presentations are filmed visiting the site of the Berlin 1936 Olympics and other iconic spaces; sometimes they talk among themselves about the challenges they’ve faced in their sports while sitting on the grass or loll together affectionately on the bleachers,...

Veteran Indian director and actor Aparna Sen’s new project “Her Indian Summer” is set to be developed as an Indo-u.K. co-production, it was revealed during a recent London retrospective of her work.
The film, a mixed-race love story set against the backdrop of the 1947 partition of the subcontinent into India and Pakistan, is being produced by Kolkata-based Indian producer-director Aritra Sen and Los Angeles-based British writer-director Alex Harvey’s Big Bazaar Films.
Sen came to notice as an actor with the “Samapti” segment in Oscar winner Satyajit Ray’s “Three Daughters” (1961). She acted in several more films by Ray and also worked with Indian cinema greats Mrinal Sen, Tapan Sinha and Rituparno Ghosh. Her acting credits also include Merchant-Ivory films “The Guru” (1969) and “Bombay Talkie” (1970).

Unlike many other fawning documentaries about big stars, HBO’s Faye is fascinatingly candid and unvarnished
Faye: The Many lives of Faye Dunaway, now streaming on Max in the US, is a refreshingly frank portrait of a genuinely interesting star. In fact it is often surprisingly candid. The director Laurent Bouzereau is a friend of the actor’s son Liam Dunaway O’Neill, who appears several times, so it is naturally a very compassionate film. Crucially, however, it confronts without flinching the subject’s reputation for being what is euphemistically described as “difficult” – so much so that even the redoubtable Bette Davis told Johnny Carson she would never work with her again.
The documentary begins with Dunaway on edge, haranguing the film-makers to get started. She displays both the tetchiness and the perfectionism – the couch, the camera angle just aren’t right – that fed into that notorious reputation. But her face...

Daniela de Felice’s impressionistic, sensuous documentary meditates on the romantic relationships and student activism of her youth in 1990s Italy
Bittersweet memories rise like mist in Daniela de Felice’s impressionistic, sensuous documentary recalling the halcyon days of her youth in 1990s Italy. Ardenza employs strikingly tactile visual techniques: it begins with roving camera movements that cruise through long, cavernous hospital corridors. Alluding to her gruelling treatment for an unnamed condition, De Felice’s narration then rolls back to the past as she speaks of romantic relationships and student activism under Silvio Berlusconi’s administration, all charged with tumultuous passion. Sepia-toned images are projected on what looks like a fluttering fabric screen whose surface is flecked with subtle black ridges and marks.
Presented in this unusual fashion, footage of this era gains a highly textured, at times ghostly, quality. Scenes of nocturnal streets, tranquil forests and fervent protests are...

“Successor,” a Chinese-produced comedy drama about escape from poverty, dominated a big weekend at the Mainland China box office. The session also saw an impressive re-release for Japanese animation “Your Name” and Hollywood action film “Twisters” blown into instant irrelevance.
Data from consultancy firm Artisan Gateway showed “Successor” earning RMB633 million ($89.1 million) between Friday and Sunday in China. While this represented the film’s official first weekend, “Successor” finished Sunday with a cumulative total of RMB1.55 billion or $219 million.
That is due to two days of wide screenings a weekend earlier that were considered as previews (causing the title to be omitted from Comscore charts a week earlier) and an opportunistic pulling forward of its official release to Tuesday (July 16), allowing it to jump ahead of weaker titles in the market.
“Successor” is co-directed by Yan Fei and Peng Damo and stars Shen Teng, Ma Li, Shi Pengyuan, Sa Rina and Xiao Bochen.

The plot of Jonathan Frakes' 1996 sci-fi film "Star Trek: First Contact" took Captain Picard (Patrick Stewart) and the crew of the Enterprise-e back in time to the year 2063. It seems that the Borg, a malignant race of all-consuming cyborgs, had traveled to that year in order to attack Earth when the planet was still recovering from the recently-ended World War III. The Borg could easily swoop in and assimilate the 21st-century humans into their mechanical collective, were the Enterprise not there to stop them.
The Borg also aimed to foil First Contact, a momentous event in human history. According to "Trek" lore, 2063 was the year humans first made contact with an alien species, forcing all Earthlings to realize they weren't alone in the galaxy and unite under a doctrine of peace and togetherness. If the Borg could stop that, then they could alter history in their favor.

This article contains spoilers for "House of the Dragon" season 2 and George R.R. Martin's book series.
This week's episode of "House of the Dragon" wasn't a massive game-changer, but certainly laid the groundwork for what will most definitely be a hell of a final two episodes of the season. Daemon Targaryen (Matt Smith) is still away at the extremely cursed House of Harrenhal trying to raise an army for his niece/wife, Queen Rhaenyra (Emma D'Arcy) but is continually tortured by hallucinations — including his dead brother King Viserys (Rhys Ifans) telling him that he'll never be king, and going down on his own mother as she tells him he's her favorite son. Daemon is an unpredictable, selfish, and sadistic wildcard and this psychological torture is admittedly very fun to watch. Telling that his "f*** this, I'm out" moment came after hallucinating his brother telling him he sucks and not...

Spoilers for "House of the Dragon" follow.
In "House of the Dragon," war is in full effect. Both sides have taken heavy losses, an idiotic king made a dumb decision that ruined his life, and nothing will ever be the same. As much as Rhaenyra has tried to avoid an all-out war, there is no going back now, but what's interesting about season 2 of the show is how it's making sure the audience sees that the war is affecting every single part of the kingdom.
Unlike the War of the Five Kings in "Game of Thrones," which was a chaotic, sprawling mess with too many factions and characters, the Dance of the Dragon is much clearer and straightforward.
With only two factions fighting, the conflict has taken over all of Westeros (except Dorne) but still feels relatively small since it's a family affair. What do we say to the God of Spoilers? Not today. Warning: This article discusses major spoilers from the latest episode of "House of the Dragon."
The hit HBO fantasy series "House of the Dragon" plays with time a bit more than its predecessor, "Game of Thrones." The George R. R. Martin book it's based on, "Fire & Blood," was written like a historical document, cobbled together from the various accounts of Westerosi historians, and it spans hundreds of years to cover all of the major doings of the Targaryen family. "House of the Dragon" is specifically based on the section "The Dying of the Dragons," which spans around 40 years, give or take, which means that the series is full of flashbacks and time skips. All of this means that actors whose characters have been killed off (or aged up) can still potentially appear. There is one other way for actors...

“Escape,” a Korean-made action drama that has been on release for most of the month, took the lead at the South Korean box office over the latest weekend.
The film recounts the story of a North Korean soldier who dreams of defecting and the South Korean officer who pursues him. It is directed by Lee Jong-pil, who previously made surprise 2020 hit “Samjin Company English Class.” It stars Lee Je-hoon and Koo Kyo-hwan in the lead roles.
“Escape” earned $2.61 million between Friday and Sunday, according to data from Kobis, the tracking service operated by the Korean Film Council (Kofic). That represented an unusual 7% week-on-week gain for the film, suggesting strong word of mouth sentiment. After 19 days on release “Escape” has accumulated $13.0 million, earned from 1.9 million spectators.
“Inside Out 2,” which headed the chart for the previous five weeks, slipped to second place. It earned $1.98 million over the weekend to extend its...

Comedian Bob Newhart passed away this week at the age of 94, leaving behind a legacy built on big laughs and heartwarming performances. While plenty of TV fans knew Newhart best for his self-titled sitcoms, "The Bob Newhart Show" and "Newhart," a younger generation got familiar with the comedic actor thanks to his roles in "Elf" and on the CBS show "The Big Bang Theory." The latter would ultimately pave the way for the actor's final on-screen appearance, in which he reprised his role of beloved kids' TV scientist Professor Proton in the show's prequel series, "Young Sheldon."
Newhart first joined "The Big Bang Theory" in season 6, playing a Mr. Wizard or Bill Nye-like science expert who shared his curiosity with the world, including kid versions of Sheldon and Leonard. Though the TV host turned party performer lands in the hospital during his first appearance, Newhart would go on to...

The screenwriter behind “A Few Good Men” and “The American President,” as well as the creator of the much-lauded TV series “The West Wing,” Aaron Sorkin, despite having no experience in government or politics, has always claimed a sharp understanding of the behind-the-scenes machinations that keep the world spinning. In his most recent display of this keen awareness, Sorkin published an op-ed in The New York Times this morning, prior to President Biden announcing his withdrawal from the presidential race and endorsement of Vice President Kamala Harris, in which he told Democrats to nominate Republican Mitt Romney at their convention next month.
In the piece, Sorkin reflects on a season 3 plot of “The West Wing” in which fictional President Bartlet (Martin Sheen) decides to run for re-election despite recently announcing withholding his multiple sclerosis diagnosis from the electorate. Bartlet managed to prove his worthiness despite the illness and goes on to win a second term,...

Westwood Village’s Bruin Theatre and Fox Village Theatre will screen their last films — for now — on Thursday as Regency Theatres’ lease comes to an end at the two historic Los Angeles venues.
Opened in 1937, the streamline-moderne style Bruin is being represented by commercial real estate firm Newmark, which repped the sale of the Fox Village. With 670 seats, it’s smaller than the Fox Village Theatre across the street, which currently has about 1400 seats.
Both venues have a long history of hosting movie premieres, while the Bruin also played an important role in Quentin Tarantino’s “Once Upon a Time in Hollywood.”
“The owners thank the Golin Family and Regency Theaters for our relationship with them for the last 14 years. The owners are currently evaluating future opportunities for The Bruin,” said Owen Solomon, a representative for the building’s owners.

Lots of things make Ridley Scott grumpy. Critics of "Blade Runner" make him grumpy. All of those millennials not watching "The Last Duel" make him grumpy. The idea of making "wizard films" for Disney makes him grumpy. The world seems like one big inconvenience to the octogenarian, to the extent that it's not really accurate to say these things make him grumpy. Much like Mark Ruffalo's Bruce Banner in "The Avengers," the secret to Scott's remarkably durable crotchetiness is that he's always grumpy.
None of this, of course, takes away from the man's equally remarkable filmography. While there are several dubious entries on that list, anyone who made "Blade Runner" is, in my opinion, unimpeachably brilliant. Still, I implore you to take a quick peek at Scott's Wikipedia page and marvel at the sheer level of irascibility emanating from his photo in what is surely the most accurate visual...

Though star Ryan Reynolds doesn’t fully endorse parents showing their kids the new R-rated “Deadpool & Wolverine,” he told The New York Times in a recent interview that he himself showed the film to both his 9 year-old son and mother in her late 70s and said, “Both of them were laughing their guts out, were feeling the emotion where I most desperately hoped people would be. When I saw rated-r movies when I was a kid, they left a huge impression on me because I didn’t feel like people were pulling punches, and it’s been a huge inspiration to so many of the things that I look to make now.”

The 1999 summer movie season was one for the history books. It saw the release of the first "Star Wars" film in well over a decade, "Austin Powers" went from VHS success to bonafide blockbuster, and an unknown director named M. Night Shyamalan came out of nowhere to deliver the second-highest grossing title of the year. "The Sixth Sense" would've been that year's definitive work of horror, too, had it not been for "The Blair Witch Project." Daniel Myrick and Eduardo Sánchez's shoestring-budgeted phenomenon, which premiered just a few weeks before young Haley Joel Osment saw dead people, was inescapable. Heather Donahue's terrified, teary-eyed confession to her camera in the film instantly became a widely-recognized piece of iconography alongside the movie's maddening final shot, both of which would soon be referenced and parodied in virtually equal measure.

Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige spoke to BlackTree TV on his press tour for “Deadpool & Wolverine” and briefly touched upon the company’s long-in-the-works “Blade” reboot, which still has two-time Oscar winner Mahershala Ali set to star. Marvel announced its “Blade” reboot in July 2019, but development has been rocky as several writers and directors have come and gone from the project over the years. Feige said not rushing the film has been of utmost importance for the studio.
Feige was asked about “Blade” in relation to “Deadpool & Wolverine,” which is the first R-rated entry in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. The Marvel boss said the only way of bringing Deadpool into the MCU was to keep him R-rated as that’s the essence of his character. The same goes for Blade, Feige teased.

Aaron Sorkin no longer believes the Democratic Party should select Republican Senator Mitt Romney as its candidate in the 2024 presidential race.
Earlier on Sunday, an op-ed by Sorkin was published in the New York Times, in which the “West Wing” creator suggested that the Democratic Party should select a Republican candidate to defeat former President Donald Trump this November.
“At their convention next month, the Democrats should nominate Mitt Romney,” Sorkin wrote.
However, after President Joe Biden announced hours later that he was dropping out of the race, Sorkin retracted his sentiment — or his “pitch to the writers’ room,” as he put it in his op-ed. He also publicly endorsed Vice President Kamala Harris, who launched her campaign for the White House.
“I take it all back. Harris for America!” Sorkin wrote on Sunday, asking “West Wing” star Joshua Malina to share the statement on his X/Twitter account. Sorkin...

Robert Zemeckis couldn't have asked for a more propitious start to his filmmaking career. Soon after graduating from University of Southern California's School of Cinematic Arts in 1973, Zemeckis, on the strength of his award-winning student film, found a powerful young mentor in Steven Spielberg. The "Jaws" maestro was Universal Pictures' in-house wunderkind, so when he flipped out over "I Wanna Hold Your Hand," a raucous comedy, written by Zemeckis and his creative partner Bob Gale, about a trio of young girls desperate to attend the live taping of The Beatles' first performance on "The Ed Sullivan Show," the studio greenlit it -- even though Zemeckis was completely untested as a feature director.
Five years later, Zemeckis' was very close to finished in Hollywood.
With a budget of $2.8 million, "I Wanna Hold Your Hand" wasn't considered a gamble. And when it lost money for Universal, the studio didn't sweat it. But...

Rachel Yoder’s magical realist novel “Nightbitch” isn’t the easiest source material to take on. First off, a great deal of it features an internal narrative. Second, that internal narrative covers a very specific experience of motherhood that may not translate well to the screen or be understood by all. For writer/director Marielle Heller, these weren’t challenges as much as they were features of what drew her to the project. Producer and star Amy Adams worked with Annapurna Pictures to option the book and, in a recent piece for Vanity Fair, describe Heller as their “first choice” in terms of directors.
Heller herself found it the perfect material to dive into considering where she was at that time in her life. She said to Vanity Fair, “I was writing it after being isolated in my house for a year. And my husband was on production, so I...

“Twisters” blasted off at the domestic box office with a huge $80.5 million, but one of the biggest talking points from film on social media is for something that didn’t actually make it into the movie. Set footage depicting stars Daisy Edgar-Jones and Glen Powell filming a climactic scene in which their characters share a passionate kiss went viral in the days leading up to the “Twisters” release, but fans were soon left devastated by the kiss not making it into the theatrical cut.
“I think it’s a Spielberg note, wasn’t it?” Edgar-Jones told Collider about the cut kiss, revealing that executive producer Steven Spielberg opted for the kiss not to be shown in the movie. “I think it stops the film feeling too clichéd, actually. I think there’s something really wonderful about it feeling like there’s a continuation. This isn’t the end of their story.

On December 17, 1989, America sat down to watch "The Simpsons." The animated characters created by Matt Groening first appeared in short segments on the variety series "The Tracey Ullman Show," but by 1989, the Simpson family was ready to take on their own series.
Or were they?
The first episode to make it to air was the holiday special "Simpsons Roasting on and Open Fire," in which a down-on-his luck Homer (voiced by Dan Castellaneta) takes a job as a mall Santa. Eventually, the family adopts a greyhound dog named Santa's Little Helper, and Christmas is saved. It may not be the best episode of "The Simpsons," but it certainly made history: as of this writing, "The Simpsons" is still on the air, having just wrapped its 35th season. But back in 1989, a completely different episode of "The Simpsons" could've been the premiere. Then everything changed at the last minute.

At the end of Nicholas Meyer's 1991 film "Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country," the U.S.S. Enterprise-a is ordered back to Starfleet headquarters ... to be decommissioned. This was, the crew finally realized, their final, final adventure as a crew, and the road had come to an end. Spock (Leonard Nimoy), however, gave the perfect response "If I were human," he said, "I believe my response would be: 'Go to Hell.'" He then added, hastily, "If I were human."
I can only hear Nimoy's reading of "Go to Hell" when thinking about his non-participation in "Star Trek: Generations" in 1994. "Generations," as most Trekkies might tell you, is a notably weak film, presenting a rushed jumble of ideas without much drama or profundity. Despite the film having been shot in 2016 prior to Donald Trump’s electoral college win, at the time of its premiere in 2017 at the Toronto International Film Festival “The Death of Stalin” was immediately hailed as a finger-on-the-pulse political satire. How could it not be? Coming from Armando Iannucci, one of the great humorists of his generation, known for capturing government in all of its obscene clumsiness in the U.K. with “The Thick of It” and “In the Loop,” as well as across the pond in the U.S. with the hit TV series “Veep,” “The Death of Stalin” marked the first time the writer/director took on actual history.
Based on the French graphic novel, “La Mort de Staline,” the film is a comedic interpretation of the social and political power struggle that followed the death of Russian leader Joseph Stalin in 1953. Featuring an all-star cast that includes Steve Buscemi,...

For once, disaster is a box-office positive. “Twisters” (Universal) beat all projections to score an $80.5 million #1 weekend. Timed for needed escapism, and with the cataclysmic genre that excels on premium screens, it proved a worthy successor to its original.
The 1996 “Twister” opened to $41 million in early May. (That was back when pre-Memorial Day didn’t mean the start of summer.) At today’s prices, that would represent around $100 million today. It ended up with a six-time multiple of $495 (about $600 million at today’s prices).
Because “Twisters” competed for attention in the research, tracking far underestimated the interest in the film. Projections of $40 million-$50 million seemed wrong on multiple levels, but even our prediction of at least $60 million fell far short of the mark.
Even more impressive is its weekend trajectory. After $8 million in previews, $70 million seemed plausible for the weekend. The guess rose to $75 million by Saturday. But when the...
