'Hail' of a controversy: Possible state record hail stone falls in Texas panhandle

What could be the largest hail stone in Texas history fell in the Texas panhandle.

Around 7:30 p.m. Sunday, a monster of a hail stone was found near Vigo Park in Swisher County.

In fact, it was compared to the size of a Monster energy drink.

The storm chaser who posted about it said the hail was 7.25-inches, which would be a new state record.

“That's the biggest hail I've ever seen, and I've been chasing storms for more than 30 years,” said Val Castor.

The current record is a 6.416-inch hail stone that fell in Hondo, west of San Antonio, on April 28, 2021.

But here is why it's not officially a state record, yet.

The Texas State Climate Extremes Committee has to meet and confirm the size. That process can take weeks.

It's similar to having the "state record" bass in the livewell of your boat. Until it's been weighed on a certified scale, it's only a fish tale.
