A haboob blew through the Texas panhandle on Wednesday.

Winds gusting up to 92 mph generated by severe storms is what created the haboob.

Haboobs are giant walls of dust resulting from the combination of strong winds from nearby thunderstorms and dry conditions. They are common in dry, desert areas and are often seen in areas of the Middle East, where the name of the phenomenon originates.

They are also fairly common during the summer monsoon of the Desert Southwest here in the United States.

“Haboob” comes from the Arabic word habb, meaning “wind.”
