SAN ANTONIO - As temperatures soar this summer in San Antonio, so do the temperatures on the roads.

Outside our station, we measured asphalt temperatures reaching close to 140 degrees Fahrenheit.

While this heatwave might be perfect for a day by the pool, it spells trouble for your tires and vehicles if you're not cautious.

Chad Miller, owner of an auto repair business on the northwest side of town, off of DeZavala, has witnessed the impact of the scorching Texas heat firsthand.

"Last year, we experienced quite a few where the tires have started to bulge, where they have just blown out while driving," he shared.

Even everyday activities like running can be affected.

Miller recounted, "She went running last night and just in her running shoes, it melted her running shoes on the asphalt last night."

Although it's early in the season, Miller anticipates a surge in tire replacement calls as tire pressure levels, measured in pounds per square inch (PSI), rise with the increasing temperatures.

"Especially as the temperatures increase, you know, by that one or two degrees every or one or two PSI every 10 degrees, it will cause catastrophic damage to those tires," he warned.

Miller also highlighted that tire damage isn't limited to highway driving.

"A lot of times more so in asphalt parking lots where you're doing the turning, and now your tires are having a little more friction on them, side friction, so that will cause some tire damage as well," he explained.

According to TxDOT, the heat on roadways can weaken passenger vehicle tires. Both TxDOT and Miller advise drivers to routinely check their tire pressure throughout the summer to mitigate risks.

In case of a tire blowout, Miller advised, "If your tire does blow out, pull off right away. Get under control. Pull off right away, in a safe spot."

As the summer heats up, remember to take precautions to protect your vehicle from the blistering temperatures on San Antonio roads.
