Ecuador: Coach Felix Sanchez will not continue at the helm of the Ecuadorian national team after Copa America exit
Quito, Ecuador - July 07, 2024 [Note: video contains Spanish language] Ecuador fired coach Felix Sanchez after Thursday's Copa America quarter-final loss to Argentina, the country's football federation, FEF, said. Ecuador reached the quarter-finals for the third time in the last four editions but were eliminated by the defending champions on penalties after the match ended 1-1. The Spaniard, who guided Qatar to their first AFC Asian Cup title in 2019, signed a four-year contract in March last year. "We thank Felix and his coaching staff for their work and professionalism and wish him success in his future endeavours," the FEF said. The 48-year-old said after the match that although they were eliminated from the Copa America, he was looking forward to September's World Cup qualifiers, where Ecuador are fifth in the standings, and added that he did not want to address his future. "We made it through from the group stage to the last 16. I congratulated the players even though we couldn't get through," he told reporters. SHOTLIST: 1.
