‘Valley Girl,’ The Nicolas Cage Cult Classic, Is Available on Digital

If you’re a Nicolas Cage fan, your quarantine just got a heck of a lot better: Valley Girl is now available to rent and buy on digital for the first time ever.

Originally released in theaters in 1983, Valley Girl is one of Cage’s first starring roles. Though it was already available on DVD and Blu-ray, it has never before been available on demand. But today, MGM released the film on Amazon Prime, iTunes, FandangoNow, Google Play, and pretty much wherever you purchase digital content. (Prices may vary across platforms, but it’s around $3.99 to rent, and $9.99 to buy.)

Directed by Martha Coolidge and written by Wayne Crawford and Andrew Lane, Valley Girl is a sweet romantic comedy that’s also, like any good Nic Cage movie, ridiculous and weird. Let me put it this way: Do you want to watch an ’80s teen comedy where Nicolas Cage plays an angry Hollywood punk who falls in love with a popular high school girl (played by Deborah Foreman) and finds a way to make it work with her despite her shallow friends? Of course you do! Who wouldn’t? For some, Valley Girl will be a nostalgia-laced trip back to the ’80s. For others, it will be a chance to appreciate Nicolas Cage smoking a cigarette in a tuxedo and 3D glasses which is, as the kids say, a look.

So why is MGM finally making Valley Girl available on digital now? Probably because there’s a Valley Girl musical remake coming out next month! Directed by Rachel Lee Goldenberg, the film stars Jessica Rothe, Josh Whitehouse, Mae Whitman, Chloe Bennet, Ashleigh Murray, Jessie Ennis, and Logan Paul. Originally the remake was planned for a 2018 release, but MGM pulled the film from its schedule after Paul, a controversial YouTube star, came under fire for his disturbing videos involving dead bodies. It is now scheduled to release on digital on May 8, 2020. Entertainment Weekly debuted some first-look photos, and I have to say, it looks, like, totally gnarley.
