Westworld Season 3 Episode 2 “The Winter Line” gave us some huge flashbacks to Winterfell. About halfway through the episode, as Bernard Lowe (Jeffrey Wright) and Ashley Stubbs (Luke Hemsworth) attempt to track down what happened to Maeve Millay (Thandie Newton), they sneak into a part of the park we haven’t seen before: Park Four.

Park Four is a medieval fantasy-themed park with axes and suits of armor, medieval costumes and a lute player. Oh, and two very familiar faces working on a dragon who looks exactly like Drogon. Yup, it seems that Westworld has a Game of Thrones-themed park.

So what does this mean for Game of Thrones within the reality of Westworld? What’s real and what’s fake? Why is any of this happening!?!? Let’s hop into it.

WHAT IS THE GAME OF THRONES EASTER EGG IN WESTWORLD?

First of all, it’s less of a Game of Thrones Easter egg and more of an overt vamp. Like we said up top, as Bernard and Stubbs are trying to figure out what happened to Maeve’s missing pearl, they sneak into the mysterious Park Four. Bernard says he thought the parks shut down and Stubbs explains the techs are just waiting around to see if they get fired.

We then cut to two techs talking about selling their prize host to a start up in Costa Rica. The techs? Game of Thrones creators David Benioff and D.B. Weiss.

Then we get to see this host and it’s none other than Daenerys’s beloved dragon, Drogon.

After that Stubbs sees a minstrel plucking the Westworld theme song on a lute for hosts posing as medieval lords. (Both Game of Thrones and Westworld have the same composer, Ramin Djawadi.)

Even if Park Four is canonically a nondescript fantasy-themed park, the addition of Drogon and appearance Benioff and Weiss place the world as distinctly Game of Thrones-related. However, besides Drogon, none of the detail work on the costumes or in the heraldry matches with Game of Thrones the show. These could be side characters, but the details still aren’t quite right.

So what does this mean?

IS THERE A GAME OF THRONES-WORLD IN WESTWORLD? OR WAS GAME OF THRONES A WESTWORLD THEME PARK ALL ALONG?

Do you ever question the nature of your reality? Because maybe Game of Thrones wasn’t a show on HBO. Maybe we were just watching a Westworld park narrative play out before our eyes. Is that a possibility?!?!

Sure, but it might be more likely that Game of Thrones was just a prevalent hit in the world of Westworld that its fandom persisted into the future. Maybe Delos built a Game of Thrones-inspired park to appeal to the saga’s persistent fans.

Or maybe, just maybe…David Benioff and D.B. Weiss are friends with Westworld creators Lisa Joy and Jonathan Nolan, and they all thought it would be fun to wink at HBO’s now finished mega-hit. (It’s also possible that it was easier to just cut and paste the CGI programming for Drogon into Westworld than to build a whole new dragon for once quick cut.)
