After over a year of waiting, Narcos: Mexico Season 2 is finally coming to Netflix. But when does Narcos: Mexico Season 2 start? And how many episodes are in this new season?

Netflix’s ongoing drama about the battle between drug lords and the DEA has long been a fan favorite. Narcos: Mexico is currently averaging an 89 percent on Rotten Tomatoes. But few installments of the series have inspired more anticipation than this upcoming one. Last season saw Miguel Ángel Félix Gallardo (Diego Luna), the head of the Guadalajara Cartel and the founder of the modern-day drug trade, face off against DEA agent Kiki Camarena (Michael Peña). After an undercover operation executed by Camarena, Félix Gallardo ordered the U.S. agent’s kidnapping, torture, and eventual murder. That decision and the United States’ response is what led to this drug lord’s collapse. And this week we can watch a dramatized version of it all. Here’s everything you need to know about Narcos: Mexico Season 2.

What Is the Difference Between Narcos and Narcos: Mexico?

It all comes down to location. Narcos’ first three seasons focused on Colombia as it detailed the rise and fall of the Medellín Cartel in Seasons 1 and 2 and the Cali Cartel in Season 3. As indicated by its name, Narcos: Mexico is all about Mexico’s cartels during that same time period. Specifically it’s about the Guadalajara Cartel, the Juárez Cartel, the Tijuana Cartel, and the Sinaloa Cartel and their unification under Miguel Ángel Félix Gallardo.

But don’t let the distinction between these two series fool you. There are still crossovers to expect. As Félix Gallardo expanded his role as a sort of de facto leader over Mexico’s main cartels, his relationship with the Colombian cartels strengthened. A system was developed where the Colombian cartels (mainly the Cali Cartel) would produce cocaine, and Félix Gallardo would find ways to transport it to the States. Expect to see more than a couple of returning Narcos faces in this new season.

What Is Narcos: Mexico Season 2 About? What to Remember from Narcos: Mexico Season 1

Structurally, Narcos: Mexico is the most similar to Narcos’ first two seasons. Like with Pablo Escobar (Wagner Moura), Season 1 focused on Félix Gallardo’s (Diego Luna) rise from nobody to Mexico’s top criminal lord. And in Season 2 we’re going to see him fall.

A former cop, Félix Gallardo ascended the ranks to become one of the heads of the Guadalajara Cartel. That’s when he noticed a flaw in Mexico’s cartel system. Because each of Mexico’s cartels operated independently, they often fought among each other and as a result allowed Colombia’s less divided Medellín and Cali Cartels to take the lion’s share of cocaine trafficking. Félix Gallardo found a way to remedy that by convincing the heads of almost every cartel to unite via a coalition. It worked. But as Narcos: Mexico‘s first season detailed, Félix Gallardo’s biggest rival in his expansion plans was Enrique “Kiki” Camarena (Michael Peña), a DEA agent who took a special interest in his rise.

Camarena eventually managed to infiltrate Félix Gallardo’s drug trafficking operation. This enraged Félix Gallardo, who ordered for Camarena to be kidnapped. That’s also when this drug lord seriously messed up. Over 30 hours Camarena was tortured and interrogated before he was ultimately murdered.

Kiki Camarena’s death launched Operation Leyenda, one of the biggest DEA operations ever undertaken. In the universe of this show that operation was led by the fictional Agent Walt Breslin (Scoot McNairy). Narcos: Mexico Season 2 will follow the start and conclusion of this operation while also detailing how killing a U.S. agent came to haunt Félix Gallardo. Expect some jaw-dropping undercover operations from the DEA and a lot of in-cartel fighting from Félix Gallardo’s problematic alliance. Last season the Tijuana and Sinaloa guys hated each other, and nothing has changed that.
