Narcos: Mexico

Right when you need another engrossing fall binge to last through Thanksgiving Netflix is here to save the day. Though it has new characters, a new location, and an ominously specific new title, Narcos: Mexico is still the same gory and addicting crime drama you know and love. Things are just a little different this time around for the spin-off series, from the story Narcos is covering down to the narrator telling us about it.

That’s right. If you’ve been binge-watching Narcos: Mexico you’ve probably been thrown by the gruff and flippant American accent explaining this season’s twists and turns. Though the commanding narrator has become a staple of this intricate and complicated drama, the man behind this season’s finer print isn’t who you think. Here’s your guide to this season’s big change and what it may mean for Narcos: Mexico‘s future.

Is Steve Murphy the narrator of Narcos: Mexico?

Originally DEA agent Steve Murphy (Boyd Holbrook) was our guide into the bloodthirsty world of narcotics. Murphy’s character served as the narrator for Seasons 1 and 2. And at first listen it may seem like Bolbrook has returned for Narcos: Mexico. The actor’s weary smugness does seem to match this year’s season better than the series’ other narrator — Season 3’s Agent Javier Peña (Pedro Pascal).

But for the first time in Narcos history, it’s not Holbrook or Pascal who are calling the shots. The narrator of Narcos: Mexico is a newcomer and an unexpected one at that.

Who is the narrator of Narcos: Mexico?

According to EW that would be Scoot McNairy. The Argo and Halt and Catch Fire actor is playing the role of a DEA agent who has yet to be announced. Typically Narcos is narrated by one of the agents leading each season. But since all of this season revolves around the tragic death of Agent Kiki Camarena (Michael Pena), there’s a very good reason why Pena hasn’t been explaining the intricacies of pot production to us.

What does Narcos: Mexico‘s narrator mean for the show’s future?

McNairy’s unnamed character tells us two major things. One, there’s another high-powered DEA agent in the Narcos universe we need to meet, and two, this one has a deep understanding of the crime that helped form and rock the world of Mexican cartels. Considering that Narcos‘ latest spinoff is only about Mexico and that one major drug lord keeps popping up as part of Felix Gallardo’s (Diego Luna) crew, this could mean one huge thing. If Narcos: Mexico gets a Season 2, we’re likely going to be seeing a lot more of El Chapo.

The bottom line? You may not know McNairy’s character now, but get ready. Something tells us he’s connected to a major chilling moment in history.
