The 23 Best Side Characters on ‘Friends’ – Ranked

This will probably blow your mind, but the television program Friends was the huge success that it was due to the strength of its central six-person ensemble. Jennifer Aniston, Courteney Cox, Lisa Kudrow, Matt LeBlanc, Matthew Perry, and David Schwimmer instantly became the six most recognizable faces on television. Their chemistry — either paired up or within the whole group — was undeniable. We didn’t call them the Fab Six, but we probably should have, because they were fab and there were six of them.

But as with any ensemble comedy, the main ingredients only tell part of the story. A big part, sure, but where would your pork tenderloin be without those sprigs of rosemary? Where would your grilled chicken be without that adobo rub? Which then led us to ask the question: Who are the perfectly blanched-then-grilled asparagus spears of the Friends universe? So in the spirit of our ranking of the best side characters on Seinfeld, we picked out the 23 best side characters who ever passed through the Friends universe and ranked them. Some of these characters were frequently recurring faves, while others were only around for an episodes. But they all made their mark in one way or another.

And of course, as with any list, there are honorable mentions who just missed the cut. So here is where we pay respect to:

  • Nora Tyler Bing (Morgan Fairchild), Chandler’s glam and sexy mom who writes erotic novels and flirts with Ross.
  • Carol Willick (Jane Sibbett), Ross’s ex-wife whose lesbian awakening caused him no shortage of angst but who was almost certainly a better parent to little Ben.
  • Fun Bobby (Vincent Ventresca), who was almost more certainly funnier as a concept — once he stops drinking he’s not very fun at all — than as a character.
  • Jill (Reese Witherspoon) and Amy (Christina Applegate) Green, Rachel’s sisters who show up in New York at different intervals and present Rachel with different problems. Jill is spoiled and wants to date Ross. Amy is spoiled and also mean to Rachel’s daughter, Emma.
  • Alice Knight Buffay (Debra Jo Rupp), Frank’s former teacher who is now Frank’s wife, whose cheerful demeanor in the face of things like infertility makes her kind of a delight.
  • Sandra Green (Marlo Thomas), Rachel’s mother, whose late-in-life divorce is liberating for her but vexing for her daughter.
  • Charlie Wheeler (Aisha Tyler), who was the first woman to come between Joey and Ross, and was also the rare recurring Friends character of color.
