UPDATE 08/21/17: Good news! Friends From College has officially been renewed for an eight-episode second season!

For some fans, eight episodes of Netflix’s Friends from College just isn’t enough, which makes perfect sense. When you’ve assembled a cast that includes Keegan Michael Key, Fred SavageCobie Smulders, and Annie Parisse, people are naturally going to be curious about a potential second season. The new Netflix dramedy follows a recently reunited group of friends from Harvard as they navigate life and love in New York City. Emphasis on the love.

The central conflict of the series centers on two Harvard sweethearts, Ethan (Key) and Sam (Parisse), who have been secretly hooking up for the better part of two decades despite the fact that Ethan is now married to their shared college pal Lisa (Smulders). Also starring Nat Faxon, Jae Suh Park, and Billy Eichner, the first season follows the complications that arise from Ethan and Sam’s clandestine trysts.

What’s the latest info regarding Friends from College Season 2? Here’s everything we know about a potential second season.

DID SEASON 1 END ON A CLIFFHANGER?

Kind of. Moments after Sam’s SUV slowly rolled into a swimming pool, Lisa tells Ethan that she thinks they should take a break. A separation between the two could certainly generate an abundance of story ideas and conflict for Season 2.

DIDN’T KATE MCKINNON MAKE AN APPEARANCE DURING THE SEASON?

She did indeed! You can read all about McKinnon’s hilarious cameo right here

HAS FRIENDS FROM COLLEGE BEEN RENEWED FOR SEASON 2?

Not yet. While the series has received mixed reviews, there are a variety of reasons to believe that we could see a second season.

Not only did the season end on a cliffhanger, but the central affair was never really dealt with by the friend group. Even though the streaming service has recently pulled the plug on The Get Down, Girlboss, and Sense8, they may want to order an additional season to keep the high-profile cast at Netflix.

WHAT DO THE SHOWRUNNERS HAVE TO SAY ABOUT SEASON 2?

Friends from College was created by the husband and wife team of Nicholas Stoller (Neighbors, Forgetting Sarah Marshall) and Francesca Delbanco.

During the New York City premiere of the Netflix comedy, Delbanco told Bustle that they “hope to do” a Season 2, while Stoller revealed that the couple have “vague ideas” about what the series might explore in a second season. One of those ideas may be the shifting power dynamic between Ethan and Sam after the events of the Season 1 finale.

“The power dynamic of an affair also changes when someone’s suddenly available,” Stoller told Thrillist. “That, to us, seems like an interesting thing to play around with, in terms of Ethan and Sam. If he and Lisa aren’t together, that’s probably gonna make Sam not want to be as involved.”

WHEN COULD WE POTENTIALLY SEE FRIENDS FROM COLLEGE SEASON 2?

It depends on when Netflix announces its plans for the show’s future.

If the streaming service officially renews the series in the next month or two, we would expect to see a second season premiere around mid-fall or early winter of 2018. Currently boasting a 6.8/10 IMDB rating and a 64% audience score (but a 25% Tomatometer ranking) on Rotten Tomatoes, I’d say the chances of a renewal are slightly above average. Fans are still in the midst of streaming Season 1, so Netflix may be waiting to gather more data before making a decision regarding Season 2.

Decider will update this story as it develops.
