The Fate of the Furious

You know what they say: the eighth time’s a charm! Okay, that’s not really a saying, and it’s also not applicable to the Fast & Furious franchise since they’ve been knockin’ ’em outta the park for a decade now. But still, The Fate of the Furious charmed worldwide audiences enough to become the second highest-grossing film in the franchise with $1.2 billion earned. This time around, Dom Toretto (Vin Diesel) has to go up against a threat unlike any he’s ever faced before: his own crew! What could possibly make Dom turn on his family? And how does Charlize Theron’s dreadlock-sporting hacker fit into it? You’ll have to buy the film in order to find out (or wait to rent it in a few weeks)!

Song to Song

Experimental film auteur Terrence Malick set his sights on the Austin, Texas music scene for Song to Song, a drama with a truly killer cast (Ryan Gosling, Michael Fassbender, Rooney Mara, and Natalie Portman to name a few). The film has been in development for years, dating all the way back to 2011. Filming wrapped in late 2013, and the final product (now available to purchase) has been trimmed down to two hours from Malick’s first eight-hour long first cut. The final result has left critics scratching their head, and Song to Song has a 45% on Rotten Tomatoes. Still, everyone pretty much agrees that the experimental film’s a visual treat, so your mileage may vary!

Superman II

If you dug Wonder Woman more than the previous DC superhero films, then you may want to travel back in time to 1980 and check out one of WW’s tonal predecessors. The follow-up to 1978’s Superman has been hailed by many comic fans as one of the greatest–if not the greatest–superhero film of all time. The movie, which features Christopher Reeve’s inspirational yet relatable Man of Steel, pits Superman against a trio of powerful Kryptonian criminals. If Man of Steel left you cold, you’ll probably find a lot to love in this warm (but still dramatic) movie. And hey–this is a Superman that smiles and doesn’t kill!
