About us

Arrow Films is a British independent film restorer specializing in world cinema, arthouse, horror and classic films. It sells Ultra HD Blu-rays, Blu-rays and DVDs.

Product Description

IS IT A NIGHTMARE? OR IS IT… THE SLAYER?

One of the most sought-after titles for slasher fans everywhere, The Slayer finally rises from the ashes of obscurity in a brand new 4K transfer courtesy of Arrow Video.

Two young couples set off to a secluded island for what promises to be a restful retreat. But the peace is short-lived: as a storm batters the island, troubled artist Kay begins to sense that a malevolent presence is here with them, stalking them at every turn. Is she losing her mind, or are her childhood nightmares of a demonic assailant coming to terrifying life?

Previously only available on home video in truncated or full screen versions, The Slayer – whose nightmares-seeping-into-reality theme predates a certain Wes Craven classic by several years – comes lovingly restored from the original negative in a stunning transfer that will be a revelation to fans both old and new.

I was pleasantly surprised by this movie. It's flawed, certainly, but for a low-budget production, a spectacular job was achieved.

Aside from a desolate filming location, dreary atmosphere, and a good deal of tension derived from its limited cast, what the movie does really well is it sticks to its tagline: "Is it a nightmare, or is it The Slayer?" Throughout the film, it's not uncommon for this question to arise from time to time; after all, when the "slayer" of these fussy people does its work, it is either not seen or else is seen only in a shadowed glimpse. Who is making these nightmares come true? Are they even coming true, or are they all part of some vivid imagination? Hints of A NIGHTMARE ON ELM STREEET are here, albeit not fully fleshed out, due likely to a limited budget or else because the movie wants to go the minimalist route. It does end on a note which left me considering different possibilities about its concept and overall story. Some viewers don't like that, but I love works of art--such as this one--that allow the viewer (or reader) to use his or her own imagination.

THE SLAYER, while a bit slowly paced for some (younger viewers, especially) and lacking a tad in the storytelling department, is actually a pleasant, suspenseful, wonderfully dread-drenched, tense, nicely layered, occasionally gory horror film (it holds back on the exploitation, thankfully, yet when it does show gore, it shows just enough to keep us satisfied). It's one of the better horror obscurities you'll see.

This was my first time watching The Slayer. I knew next to nothing about the film, besides it was a video nasty and loved the great Arrow Video cover art. Overall I enjoyed this movie. Small cast of characters, and not too much happens. Really clueless as to why this made the video nasties. Still the few kill scenes look great, and I liked the weird supernatural dream storyline. I'd recommend to fans of obscure early 1980s Slashers.

Arrow Blu Ray video looks fantastic. As always the Arrow Blu Ray is packed full of great extras, and a cool book of essays.

I barely remember this when it came out,and saw the trailer on a trailer compilation and decided to check it out. There's a version on YouTube that's grainy but watchable. The Blu Ray of this classic is nothing short of breathtaking. Sharp picture and sound. The booklet that came with it is a nice bonus, along with the extras. Thanks to all involved for bringing this back. Creepy, atmospheric, well worth it for horror fans

After hitting the play button, a few mins later I came back into my living room from making tea and noticed our pseudo-fro'd protagonist feeding a creature in a basket... Immediately realized this is not the right movie!! That is, via Amazon Prime Streaming service, as of 11/08/18 the play button takes you to "Basket Case" instead of "The Slayer."

I live for movies like The Slayer! I liked everything about this. The cover art is pretty awesome too and it comes in a clear case which contains the bluray disc and dvd of the film. I am definitely going to start buying more Arrow releases from now on.

Cult 80's horror film that's often referred to as a predecessor to A Nightmare On Elm Street, gets the Best transfer to date. I remember seeing this on VHS years ago and it looked horrible. But now in all it's glory it looks beautiful. There's only a few moments of extra grain, but all in all very good. It certainly made me appreciate the film a whole lot more.

Story: Two couples go to an island retreat to get away from it all. But on the island, Kay a young woman of one of the two couples begins recognizing places from her nightmares and from her paintings. In her childhood she suffered nightmares of a grotesque creature that stalked her. Now on the island every time she falls asleep something becomes very real and kills.

High on atmosphere (in part due to an excellent score by composer Robert Folk) and low on action, The Slayer is a slow moving, technically adroit slasher film punctuated with memorably gory creative kills. Kay is a morose artist who obsessively paints scenes from a reoccurring nightmare she has about being stalked by a faceless killer on a mysterious island. When her husband and friends decide to take her away on a vacation to...you guessed it...an isolated island retreat, the killings start for real. Has Kay's dream killer broken into reality or do the pills she's taking have something to do with it? It's an interesting premise, one that Wes Craven would explore to greater artistic and commercial success with A Nightmare on Elm Street three years later. The Slayer was banned in the UK as a video nasty back in the early eighties. A scuzzy full screen print was re-released by VIPCO a decade later with 14 seconds snipped out from the scene where a woman (played by the directors wife) gets a pitchfork rammed through the boobs... the BBFC had a real beef with garden implements being used as weapons back in the day. Subsequent releases were sourced from the same washed out VHS source though reinstated the censored gore FX. Overall The Slayer is both a memorable and claustrophobic slasher flick that's been pretty badly treated in the past....the upcoming bluray from the excellent folks at Arrow Video should hopefully vindicate this largely forgotten slice of 80's splatter.

UPDATE: Arrow have yet again proved themselves to be ahead of the pack when it comes to resurrecting cult horror films. The 4K transfer of the film is superb and really showcases the technical chops of all those involved. Extras include a lively and very heartfelt 52 minute making of documentary, which features some great behind the scenes photos and interviews with the director, DP, gore FX team and actors. You also get three commentary tracks with the director, musical composer and those lovely (and very funny) chaps from The Hysteria Continues. As if that weren't exhaustive enough you also get a short "revisiting the locations" documentary and The Tybee Post Theatre Experience...Arrow have delivered as full a package as you could hope for. A wonderful package which finally does justice to the source material.
