HERBERT WEST HAS A GOOD HEAD ON HIS SHOULDERS... AND ANOTHER ONE ON HIS DESK.

One of the most wildly popular horror movies of all-time, Stuart Gordon s enduring splatter-comedy classic Re-Animator returns to Blu-ray in a stunning restoration packed with special features!

When medical student Dean Cain advertises for a roommate, he soon finds one in the form of Dr. Herbert West. Initially a little eccentric, it some becomes clear that West entertains some seriously outlandish theories specifically, the possibility of re-animating the dead. It s not long before Dean finds himself under West s influence, and embroiled in a serious of ghoulish experiments which threaten to go wildly out of control...

This review refers to the 2017 2-disc Arrow Blu-ray release. If you're a Re-Animator fan or even a horror film fan in general, this totally belongs on your library. I couldn't be happier with it. First of all, you get the remastered traditional unrated version and the movie looks better than it ever has. There's also the "Integral Version," the extended cut with extra scenes. The supplements are plentiful, including an informative making-of documentary fans will no doubt enjoy. The fold-out packaging is gorgeous and includes a booklet and 4 postcard-style cards. As a fan, I truly could not recommend this set enough.

I remember when I first saw this movie I was in my early teens barely having heard of it before. My only frame of reference was my oldest brother and my mother talking about it with me being too young to understand what they were getting at, at the time. Well before I saw it when my brothers bought a used VHS of the now considerably rare R-rated version, I had never seen any previews, snuck a peek at any scenes, nor did I have any concept as to who H.P. Lovecraft even was. Anyhoo, once I saw it(with scenes that I didn't know at the time weren't in the Unrated version) I instantly loved the whole concept and story but was disappointed in the minimal gore and minimal nudity. Thankfully it wasn't that long until I had some birthday money to happily find a used VHS copy of the Unrated version. While the gore and nudity was what I wanted, I was still shocked to see which scenes were still used, which scenes from the R-rated version weren't used, plus the gore, graphic violence, and nudity were intense for me at first(as per seeing them all for the very first time but after many more watches I got something out of both versions plus saw one brilliant zombie not at all like anything that I had seen before. All of that being said, I have since then become an instant fan of it's first sequel of Bride of Re-Animator and several years later Beyond Re-Animator, finally I have upgraded to the DVD's of them and now the Blu-rays.

In this review I will focus on the actor's performances, the characters, the gore effects, the humor, and the eye-candy.

First I can't emphasize enough everyone's excellent performances. Let's start of course with Herbert West aka Re-Animator himself, Jeffrey Combs. I have heard that Combs was a stage actor originally and his actor experience more than shows here. He literally stays right in character playing Dr. Herbert West a young, highly eager/enthusiastic, stern, obsessed, opinionated, questionably moral, highly scientific, genius of whom is willing to do all he deems necessary to beat death through science. Bruce Abbot is excellent as his semi-reluctant partner of who is young, handsome, likable, cool headed, and considerably torn between West's experiments and his relationship with his beautiful girlfriend Megan. David Gail is great as the plagiaristic, manipulative, sleazy, evil, ruthless, and cunning foil to Dr. West, Dr. Carl Hill.

The gore effects are sensational with practical effects, live actors to play the zombies, realistic gore, and creative looks to the morgue zombies gruesome looks. Also having David Gail as Dr. Hill seem to have his severed head and body perform both separately and together was pure genius.

Among funny scenes in the movie one that definitely gives me a chuckle is when Dr. Cain and Dr. West struggle with a living dead Rufus the cat. Also, Jeffrey Combs has several funny moments in his classic deadpan deliveries. Among them my most favorite of his hilarious lines is, "Who'd listen to a talking head? Get a job in the sideshow." That line always gives me a guffaw.

Barbara Crampton is gorgeous, a believable character, and most of all she is just plain smoking hot. She makes for both great eye-candy and sex appeal as pleasing as her nude scenes are in general.

Overall, if you love zombie movies(serious or comedic), love great 80's horror(serious or comedic), love Jeffrey Combs, enjoy excellent gore and practical effects, enjoy a good villain, enjoy great sex appeal and nudity, If you are into Lovecraft and in general just love a great classic with all of the best stuff to be entertaining, well then this movie is right up your alley. A MUST SEE!!! 10 STARS OUT OF 10!!!

The first venture into the horror genre by Executive Producer, Brian Yuzna, featuring Director, Stuart Gordon, in an excellent screenplay written by Dennis Paoli and Stuart Gordon, infused with element of black humor that repulses and shocks, leaving the audience between revulsion, horror and bleak laughter, constituting one of the most controversial cult classics which has garnered a worldwide fan base and cult following, that practically launched the career of the Brian Yuzna/Stuart Gordon pairing and rendered them a force to be reckoned with in the horror genre that features an iconic soundtrack that is comparable to those of Amadeus, Immortal Beloved, Everybody Says I Love You, Singing in the Rain, The Terminator, Hellraiser, Tales from the Crypt, X-Files, and Beauty and the Beast, which, nevertheless, features less than commendable performances by Jeffrey Combs (who plays the part of the arrogant and somewhat demented Herbert West) and the ever captivating Barbara Crampton (who plays the heroine Megan, whose physique had yet to develop into the break taking one reflected in From Beyond), both of whom made their feature debut in this horror flick and, as a result, were relatively inexperienced in the art of acting, in a story that much like the famed Monkey's Paw revolves around the theme of reanimation, based upon a story by the legendary grandmaster of gothic fiction, H.P. Lovecraft (which is characteristic of all the early ventures of the Brian Yuzna/Stuart Gordon pairing), witnesses Herbert being expelled from a university for conducting live human experiments that brought Dr. Gruberk back to life in an experiment gone awry using a revolutionary reagent that has enabled him to conquer brain death, and being accepted into a university that sees him under the tutelage of Dr. Hill, who claims that there is no feasible way to conquer brain death, only to find himself attempting to steal credit for Herbert's reagent when he discovers that Herbert has used his reagent to bring Dean Hall, Megan's father, back to life after he was butchered to death resultant of an experiment with a patient who had died of heart failure gone awry, ironically, to find himself being beheaded and brought to life by Hebert, and, having being so brought back to life, finding him attempting to satisfy his obsession with Megan by literally giving her head while she is being spread eagle (the iconic moment of the movie which caused a stir with the MPAA, and the most memorable and talked about moment of the movie), and Dr. Hill bringing forth to life all reanimated corpses for which he has gained controlled through the process of lobotomy (which in a pseudo-scientific way enables him to hypnotically control the reanimated corpses), which Cain, Megan's boyfriend and Herbert's co-conspirator in the illegitimate experiments, manages to put to rest when Megan elicits a flicker of conscious thought that enables her father to rebel against Herbert's control and enables him to collude with Cain in disposing of all the reanimated corpses, and, being driven to the brink, witnessing Cain making the same mistake that Louis Creed did in Pet Sematary with his son, Cage, and his wife, Rachel, in another movie that alludes to Monkey's Paw, by attempting to bring Megan back to life by injecting her with the reagent.

A ground breaking movie that comes with high recommendations.

Il film si vede bene... il video è quello che è in quanto non si tratta dell’edizione rimasterizzata... è un cult dell’horror gore e splatter ed è entrato di diritto tra gli horror più significativi del secolo!
