My relationship with homebrewing did not get off to the best of starts. I was plenty eager and I had a lot of shiny new equipment, but an hour after returning from my first trip to the homebrew store, I felt completely and utterly baffled. I was also not in the kitchen; I was sitting on the couch in my living room with three different, slightly contradictory sets of brewing instructions laid out on the coffee table before me. My husband was tackling this new hobby with me, and neither of us had any idea where to begin or which instructions to follow or even how to move off the couch.
Once we formed a plan of action, the situation (unfortunately) did not improve. The liquid malt extract we’d purchased was roughly the consistency of tar and wouldn’t come out of the container. Our beer juice (which some, though not all, instructions mysteriously referred to as “wort”) took forever to come to a boil. And once it did, it continued to boil right over the side of the pot, extinguishing the burner’s pilot light and making a gigantic mess. My husband and I argued about whether the batch was ruined or if we could just add some more water and carry on—the first of many such stressed-out and frustration-fueled fights to follow. To date, some of our most ferocious battles as a married couple have happened while brewing beer.
Sound familiar? Maybe your first brew day (and possibly many others) went along similar lines. Maybe you’ve never brewed before and are reading this in horror, wondering what possessed you to ever think homebrewing might be “fun to try.”
Don’t worry. I’ve got your back. What you’re holding in your hands right now is the result of many years of learning and tinkering with how to brew beer at home—without the tears or cursing. My number one goal is to guide you through those first few brews—the ones where everything is brand-new, you have no idea what’s going on, and the potential for frustration is high—and into a place where you feel confident stepping into the kitchen with nothing but a bag of grains and a desire for beer. The title for this book is also a promise: I want to help you brew better beer.
Why homebrew in the first place? Because it’s seriously fun. Because it tickles your inner science geek. Because your first batch is instant membership into a fellowship of homebrewers that stretches back for eons. Because there is no finer feeling than flicking the cap off a bottle of beer, hearing that hiss of carbonation, and taking the first sip of a beer you brewed yourself.

First of all, this book is just fun to read. I pick it up and thumb through it just because I enjoy it -- I re-read passages again and again because there's always a piece of information I missed on first pass. Re-reading this is fun, not tedious, because it's very low-jargon and written from a human voice, not too technical in its style.
It's also really beautiful and makes a really great coffee table book because of that. I'm glad to have this book in its hardcover form rather than Kindle because it looks and feels so nice. Also it is very lightweight!
Most importantly, the book is PERFECT for an ambitious beginner like myself who wants a completely straightforward how-to guide while also providing enough info that I understand why each step is done as it is, and what I could do differently if I wanted to alter a recipe. I had no problem jumping straight to the IPA recipes (I brewed my first beer! The "Very Good IPA" recipe) and brewing a great all-grain 1-gallon batch of beer which actually tastes like something I would buy commercially! Because that went so well, I bought the goods to make a 5-gallon batch which is fermenting right now, beautifully (the Affogato milk stout). This book provided me every single bit of information I needed to successfully brew both 1-gallon and 5-gallon batches of beer, from the equipment to buy, to the ingredients, to step-by-step instructions with photos to help. It has so many recipes I'm excited to try -- I've already bought ingredients for my next 1-gallon batch. Thanks for helping me get hooked on homebrewing!
One thing, though, a small little critique. It'd be awesome if the authors could proofread this book again, thoroughly, and print other copies. I'd love copies of the book without typos/repeated items on lists, etc. I want to keep and use this book for a long time, and the English freak in me gets a little anxious with the typos, which are fairly abundant for a book with this production value. It does not take away from the information presented, though, which is amazing -- I'd just love to buy another copy without the errors!
Thank you for this book Emma Christensen!! Although when I went to the brewery supply store for my ingredients, the guy at the store gave me a bit of a hard time for wanting to brew 1 gallon batch. I just told him that I jus wanted to get used to the process of brewing before jumping into 5 gallon batch.

Also, the recipes are fantastic. It reminds me of cookbook, so it's a more intuitive way to follow the process, which is great when you're still leaning. It's an awesome mix of standard beers that you'll never get tired of, and some really cool variations.
I especially loved her focus on 1 gallon, all grain batches. That's what I was really looking for when I was looking for my first book. You can make great beer in your kitchen with good quality ingredients and a very low start up cost. You obviously don't get too many bottles from 1 gallon, but that means you end up brewing more often, your skills increase really fast because of the practice, and you get to try lots of new recipes. And if you decide to increase your batch size later, you'll have a better idea of the type of equipment you want to invest in.

Having brewed before, the overall guide was a useful reminder, but nicely covers all the aspects a total beginner would need to know. The recipes I've tried so far, a Double IPA and single hop Pale, have both been exceptionally drinkable.
Unfortunately, it's aimed at the US market, so measurements may need converting to something more comprehensible and some of the varieties of hops, types of grain/yeast, may be a little harder to track down. If you're willing to push through these complications, it's a beautifully laid out book, well written, comprehensively informative and with enough recipes to keep your small batches flowing for years.

I find this is a great book whether you're a master brewer or beginner!
