Plum Island, MA August -I didn't have a problem using the sand anchor and the item is still in one piece, it actually worked better than I expect it!I read other reviews about the sand anchor splitting at the top and the handle breaking. I put a little gorilla tape at the top of the anchor just to provide a bit more support, but I dont think it made a difference in the quality of the product. Also because of the bad reviews when I placed the anchor in the sand I didn't grab the handles right away(I didnt want them to break), instead I placed my hand on top of the anchor and turn it. It didn't take much force to get it in the sand, the design works quite well. It wasn't until the anchor was about 1/3 inside the sand that i grabbed the handles and turned 2-3 more times.I like it, it works well and holds the umbrella in place. The anchor is made of plastic so I would imagine you could brake it if too much force is applied, but I dont see the need. For me the anchor worked perfectly!*** UPDATE *** Crane Beach MA September 2013After about 1/2 dozen uses the screw that holds the umbrella in place is stripped and no longer creates enough pressure to hold the umbrella in place.Anchor still works, but we carry a roll of clear tape with us and tape around the umbrella and anchor to keep the umbrella from spinning.

I've tried several other umbrella holders, like the short metal one with the spirally bottom and the latest $7 short plastic one a W-Mart with the handles and shaft that is all one single molded plastic piece. None of those seemed to work as well as this one for getting a real bite into the sand. This digs in DEEP into the sand, and you can crank it down for a solid anchor. Others simply got pulled out of the sand with any mild wind - not this one! Your umbrella will turn inside out before this thing moves! Only two drawbacks with this. One drawback was the little handle that came with it (goes thru two holes in the top end, and you use it for leverage as you crank the propellor bottom into the sand until it stops turning. The little handle twisted and bent the first time I used this - it is a much thinner plastic than the PVC shank. The handle was still useable (just have to hold it closer to the center of the shank and not out at the "ears" when cranking it). The fact that the handle is detached makes it something that can possibly get lost, too. The other drawback was the little knurled knob to tighten the umbrella into the shaft. The W-Mart anchor was MUCH better designed here, with a full sized twisting cap to tighten the screw. This one's little knob was too hard to grasp to tighten against the umbrella, and worse when you leave the beach and have to tighten the knob nearly all the way across the shaft (if you want to hold your little handle inside the shaft when carrying it).

But the anchor worked perfectly (used at Mytrle Beach, Cape May, and Perdido Key beaches - in all types of sand!). None of the two drawbacks were bad enough to drop this from a 5-star rating!

This product is wonderful! We stayed at the beach 8 days, and we didn't have to adjust our umbrella anchor once. The anchor goes into the ground fairly deep. This makes the anchor extremely sturdy. When you begin to turn the anchor, it moves into the sand easily. However, as the anchor goes deeper it gets more difficult to turn. The handle for the product is a hollow PVC type tube. When the turning became more difficult, my husband actually had problems with the handle bending. This created a handle with a permanent crease, and thus unusable.

With this being said, the problem could be easily eliminated with a solid PVC tube, wooden dowel, large wooden cooking spoon, or a piece of steel rod. We even considered placing a butter knife (made of steel) into the handle to make it sturdier. Don't let this stop your purchase of the product. It is a wonderful anchor that provides a wonderfully sturdy umbrella holder. Also, the screw that tightens on the umbrella works well. However, it is difficult to tighten by hand, and the use of a wet wash cloth or towel corner helps tremendously!

Had a disaster a couple of years ago with a beach umbrella that was supposed to anchor itself (didn't happen). This one worked perfectly. It was easy to use. I did take the advice of earlier reviewers who said the pvc handle used to twist the anchor was too flimsy and reinforced it first. I just cut a piece of dowel rod to the right length, put a little glue on it and put it inside the handle. Made it very sturdy. The stand held up to some pretty strong winds at the beach. Forgot to put down my umbrella the first night at the beach and it was still in place in the morning (although slightly tilted). Re-anchored it the next day. Easy to take out. I love this anchor.

This thing is a great value for the money. I love it. It is lightweight but very strong. It is also better then the tiny metal anchors out there, since this thing can go MUCH deeper into the ground. Everybody on the beach was asking me where to get one of these things. The tiny plastic screw that is supposed to hold your umbrella in the unit was broken upon arrival, so I "updated" the unit to a regular metal screw with a bended end (bended end to allow the screw to be tightened by hand). The metal screw update is recommended, as it is stronger and works better, I think at least.

It will fit both big umbrellas (large diameter poles) and small umbrellas (small diameter poles).

I would surely recommend this anchor for your next beach trip. It will make you able to relax and not have to worry about the umbrella blowing away. It is so strong, that instead of our umbrella blowing away, it one time folded inside out due to heavy wind, but the anchor did not bulge one tiny bit. So that is good.
