Purchase options and add-ons

Often off limits to the public, abandoned photography offers a glimpse into the beautiful urban ruins that are left behind. New Orleans faced a daunting reconstruction after having endured one of the worst storms ever on record in 2005. Hurricane Katrina caused levees to fail, releasing billions of gallons of water throughout New Orleans and surrounding parishes. The catastrophic flooding destroyed or damaged over 200,000 homes and displaced more than 800,000 citizens. Fourteen years after the storm, there are still thousands of abandoned properties across the city. As the neighborhoods rebuild, many historic structures become renovated, demolished, or simply forgotten.

In Abandoned New Orleans, photographer Leland Kent provides an extraordinary look at eight historic and abandoned locations. From a hospital where patients and staff were trapped during the storm, to a long forgotten Nazi internment camp, and the first high school built for African-American students. Each chapter gives an in-depth look at these places accompanied by a gallery of stunning imagery.

This is a great read! I loved reading about places in New Orleans I recognized & also some I’ve never seen before too. The photos capture the essence of abandoned New Orleans through the eyes of the author to give you a glimpse inside places you may never be able to see otherwise! On top of that this read is interesting & I loved learning the history of each location. I didn’t want to put this book down. Highly recommend!

After following this account on Instagram since moving to New Orleans, I was really excited to grab this book. I learned more about some places I was familiar with and was pleased to learn about some places I wasn’t. Beautiful photos accompanied by great history. Hoping to see more!

I was hoping for a more varied selection. New Orleans has so many interesting buildings I felt the selection was too narrow - I felt the pictures could have been of many other cities. Some of the photography was interesting but Though I was born there, and spent the first 35 years of my life there, I could only recognize Charity Hospital. I was hoping for more.

As someone with an interest in post-Katrina New Orleans, I loved the pictures and insights this book provided. There were quite a few unique photos of the abandoned Charity Hospital and Six Flags. I would love to see a hard copy of this book. The paperback copy does not have the best binding, and I noticed some of the pages already falling out after my first time flipping through.

Fantastic book with great photos...made even better with the informative background and history of these places. It's great that someone else (and much more talented photographer) finds these places so cool and interesting. Keep up the good work.
